Math Puzzles

Haven’t tried these yet. My husband found them the other day and I thought that I would at least pass them on…

Counting Coconuts

The past few weeks have provided us with just enough time to settle into a nice groove, AlhamduLILLAH. We’ve managed to work consistently (most days) and I’ve seen a lot of progress from all of the children.

I knew that this year would be difficult because my 4 year old has joined us in our formal school work. She’s doing very light and fun work for the most part, but she is loving it and asking to do more all the time.

I’ve always stuck to the texts where math is concerned and so far that has worked just fine. I am noticing that my oldest gets a little frazzled sometimes (and bored), so this year, I am trying to make math informative and fun.

The children love Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and read it all the time, so I searched the net to see what lapbook opportunities were out there.

I combined ideas from several different places and this is what we made:

The coconut tree on the left was made by putting paint on her forearm for the trunk, on her hands (upside down) for the palms, and her thumbs made the coconuts. The thought of her mother allowing her to paint her arms and hands was cause for plenty of excitement.  After that, she went wild with rubber stamps.

The right side has an assortment of letters from here, a place for her name, and the tree and numbers 1-10 from here. The cover came from there as well.

Letter D

We finished the letter Dd last week and have moved on to E. This turned out to be her favorite letter so far. For each letter, she learns how to write it and how it sounds.

I’m not extra strict about her handwriting yet – she’s only four. She does have to be able to recognize them so we review the letters with flashcards. I started using booklets from DLTK and we’re making some of their paper crafts too. It saves me a lot of time so that I don’t have to think up a new activity.

She especially loves the donkey. He’s detachable and his head, legs and head move.

You can find the Ugly Duckling booklet here.

Human Body

My son has been moving right along in science, and really enjoying all the lessons. We’re using a variety of sources for science, like this activity set from Scholastic.

He’s having fun while learning about the human body and the way that it all works together as one system, MashaALLAH. He loves any kind of hands-on activity and I think that he is the main reason that we have done so many lapbooks lately.

MashaALLAH, I purchased this activity book (http://teacherexpress.scholastic.com/easy-make-learn-projects-human-body) from Scholastic Teacher Express for $1. They always have great sales on that site so purchase it when there is a sale. I try not to go there too often so that I don’t end up with items that I won’t ever use!

See you later!
