One Down, 29 More to go!

As-Salamu’alaikum:

Today when I came home, I arguably got the best news any father could hear from one of his children. My seven year old son, told me today that he finished memorizing Juz ‘Ammah! SubhanALLAH!

His teacher from Studio Arabiya confirmed his completion of the juz today! He now joins his sister in having completed Juz ‘Ammah, and now plans to memorize Surah Baqarah, InshaALLAH. M. on the other hand is almost half way through Surah Kahf, so she still has a lead on him (much to his chagrin) :-).

On this note, I want to say that we thank ALLAH for introducing us to
Studio Arabiya , whose teachers have helped my children memorize Qur’an from the beginning, and demonstrated immense patience at the same time. SubhanALLAH.

It is related from ‘Uthman that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “The best of you is the one who learns the Qur’an and teaches it.” Bukhari

May ALLAH grant the founders, and teachers of Studio Arabiya Firdaus, Ameen.

Please note, I by no means am trying to show off, or elevate my status in any way, nor belittle anyone. I just wanted to share this good news with the community of Pearls of Jannah.

We ask ALLAH to protect us from any and all forms of kibr, arrogance, pride, and anything that is displeasing to ALLAH, Ameen.

Was-Salamu’alaikum

Please share this link to as many people as you can InshaALLAH, and may ALLAH put barakah in our efforts, and inspire us to spend more time learning, reading, memorizing, understanding, reflecting upon, and teaching the Qur’an, Ameen.

JazakALLAH Khair for coming.

A Message and an Update from Abu Maryam

To all followers and visitors to Pearls of Jannah:

As-Salamu’alaikum Wa RahmatULLAHI Wa Barakatuh.

I first off wish to say JazakALLAH Khair to everyone who comes to this site, and also to apologize for the inconsistent posts over the past many months. My wife (Umm Maryam) unfortunately has had to take a medical leave to look after some serious health concerns that have arisen. While these issues are serious, AlhamduLILLAH, she does not require any surgery, and the treatment that she has received has improved her condition. Because of the strain that this has taken on her, as well as continuing to homeschool and carrying out her family responsibilities to the best of her abilities, she is no longer able to regularly contribute to her blog. However, as my wife’s biggest fan and supporter, I felt that it was important to continue her blog to not let her fans, supporters, and visitors down. For this reason, we have mutually agreed to allow me to be the interim administrator of this site until she is able to take over at her earliest convenience. The focus of the site will still remain the same: The education and tarbiyyah of raising children upon the sunnah while living here in the west, as well as any interesting experiences and tidbits that might be beneficial or fun for others. It is our hope and du’a that a male perspective will also provide some much needed insight into our family dynamics, as well as to stress that the raising of a Muslim family in any society requires both parents who recognize their roles, and support their spouses in theirs. It is my intention that I hope to contribute a new post approximately once a week, InshaALLAH.

I also wish to share that I had the immense blessing from ALLAH to attend the Al-Maghrib course, “Protect This House” by Sheikh Abu ‘Eesa Niamatullah (May ALLAH increase his honour), and will share whatever points of benefit I derived from the course here on this site. This course is all about how Islamically to maintain relations with your parents (even if they are non-Muslim, abusive, unjust, non-practicing, etc.), relatives (immediate as well as distant), and especially on how to raise your children as good Muslims (with detailed discussions on education, tarbiyyah, ways of disciplining them), as well as ample opportunity to ask questions about specific scenarios, issues, and concerns. If you are living in a city where this course will be offered in the future, I strongly urge you to please take it!

On that note, I want to share the following video from Sheikh Abu ‘Eesa entitled, “The Absent Father”

JazakALLAH Khair once again to everyone for all of your patience. Please make du’a for my wife’s health and well-being, and we strongly encourage you to post your comments and thoughts on this blog. My wife enjoys receiving feedback from you, so please don’t hesitate!

May ALLAH protect you and your families, strengthen the bonds of your kinship, and keep your children and progeny on true guidance that is upon the authentic, and correct understanding of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad SAW, Ameen.

Was-Salamu’alaikum.

New Notebooking Pages

As salaamu alaykum,

I’ve added two worksheets under the heading “Sahabah” and a new page for the seerah. It’s called “How did the Quraysh respond?” We used it to list the different ways that the Quraysh protested the message of the Prophet, salallahu alayhi wa salaam.

The pages are at the top in the menu bar under Notebooking Pages. I also separated the pages into categories to make it look more organized.

It’s Jumu’ah

We started the school year with a field trip! Curriculum

The Toronto Public Library offers free tickets to different venues around town, so my husband waited in line (early in the morning, JazakAllah khayrin) and managed to get tickets to the Ontario Science Centre.

We hadn’t been in a long time, so it was nice to see some new things as well as some old favorites. What really made the trip special for us this time was the accompaniment of our neighbors.

AlhamduLillah for the outings that we were able to have with them. It has strengthened our bond as neighbors and given us fun ways to apply some of our homeschool lessons.

It was an awesome trip because there was an exhibit on electricity, which is our science focus this year. The scientist/presenter was very accommodating, bringing all the children onstage one at a time to harness some energy.

We caught the space show in the planetarium and learned how to navigate via the stars and met a few friends along the way.

Everyone had a good time in the rain forest since the poison dart frogs were kept safely behind the glass.

The good thing about the science centre is that the children can go off on their own to explore and build.

CURRICULUM

These are subject to change at any time. For now, I am combining classes with some of the subjects and we are doing others with the entire family.

The Art of Writing Poetry Unit Study

Poetry from the Fiks classes – these are poems that were written by Ustadh Abu Taubah. They cover everything from Aqeedah to TaHaarah to Jazaza, even the lineage from the Prophet Muhammad, salallahu alayhi wa sallam. We will be memorizing and discussing these, InshaAllah.

Continuation of the Seerah of the Prophet Muhammad by Sh Al-Awlaki and notebooking as we go along.

Companions of the Prophet by Abdulwahid Hamid. I have the three-volume set but there is a two-volume set available on Amazon. We are notebooking for this as well. InshaALLAH I will make the pages available.

Life of Fred Apples and Life of Fred Fractions – the children are loving these so far and already I have seen an improvement in their math skills, AlhamduLillah.

The Canadian Spelling Program  – this is an ancient textbook that I found at Value Village. The ISBN doesn’t pull up anything on this one.

Where the Red Fern Grows Unit Study

Anne of Green Gables Unit Study

Qur’an – via Studio Arabiya – see the link on the side bar – We’re done with Juz ‘Amma!
Arabic – also via Studio Arabiya

There are a few more items that I will be adding, InshaAllah but for the moment, this is it.

Busy Days Gone By

Whew! I have to say, this has been a very busy summer for us; actually, we’ve been busy since spring. My sister came to Buffalo, N.Y.on a business trip and since I hadn’t seen her in a while, we planned a quick trip down to Niagara Falls. We quickly whisked her up for a weekend visit to Toronto and that set the pace for our summer. It was nice because she never met my two youngest children before.

We have grown pretty close to our homeschooling neighbors – a great source of baraka for us, MashaALLAH. Every week or so, we met and visited a local branch of the library. Even though I told the children that they had a three book limit, they managed to check out so many books that I could hardly carry them!

Ramadan was busy as well; once again, I didn’t have too much organized but it worked out. We completed a few scheduled activities  but the children really wanted to focus on fasting (it was their first time). We all spent a lot of time working on our Qur’an memorization and my daughter is finally near the end of Juz ‘Amma, AlhamduLillah. This year, they were able to practice their memorization by leading each other in Taraweeh; this was especially nice because my daughter lead me.

Eid was especially nice because we invited our neighbors along for the celebration. There was quite a turnout this year, AlhamduLillah.

After Eid, we decided to squeeze in one more trip to Niagara Falls and MashaAllah, this was also with our neighbors. They are really like extended family for us and I pray that Allah makes things easy for them, Ameen.

Next up, what in the world are we doing in the homeschool? InshaALLAH I hope to answer this question very soon – I’m doing some last-minute preparations. Take care,
