Botany!

We started our new school year at the beginning of August but I found it a bit too ambitious while fasting and scaled back the workload. Still, we continued with math, educational games, Quran memorization and reading, and a bit of container gardening. My oldest wants to study botany this year, so we started growing green peppers from discarded seeds. We soaked them in hydrogen peroxide and then planted them in potting soil in pots and containers on our balcony.

We are using a curriculum which was developed by another homeschool mom and we are using two of the three books – the third book was only being offered used at the time and the shipping cost was more than the book, lol.

We discovered that our balcony is the perfect spot for feeding pests – namely squirrels! So, each night, we cover the pots with laundry baskets and use heavy rocks to keep them in place. As you can see, it’s very easy to get them going. We eventually separated them and moved them to separate pots.

So far, we’ve also completed leaf-rubbings, drawn the parts of a plant cell, compared different types of leaves and my son labeled the parts of a tree.

We are also growing basil in the kitchen, which not only smells nice but tastes great!

Brought To You By the Letter E

Eid has come and gone; It seemed to be a relatively quiet affair. This year, the prayer was held at the Toronto Convention Centre, so that was quite different. There were plenty of rides but I think that some may have been omitted due to the venue. Still, there were climbers, slides, bumper cars and plenty of other ways for the children to tire themselves.

The bazaar was not that exciting to me, I like to scour the booths for educational supplies but I didn’t see any. I did find a booth that gave away t-shirts for famine-relief donations.

MashaALLAH, there were lots of people there. By the time I got this video a lot of the crowd had left.

We also had our usual ice cream cake (always a hit) and we spent the time with family, AlhamduLILLAH. InshaALLAH your Eid was safe and happy and full of barakah.

Toronto Get Halal!

MashaALLAH, It has taken lots du’a, lots of hard work (and books all over the house, lol), but I am proud to say that there is a new (FREE!) app (made by my husband) called “Get Halal“.  You can find the nearest halal and kosher restaurants in the Greater Toronto Area (via GPS) and if you find a restaurant that you like, you can tweet about it or put it on Facebook. It is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and i Pad and requires iOS 4.3 or later.

Just in Time for Ramadan – Islamic Coloring Pages

You should check out this squidoo lens from our dearest ukhti. It’s really encouraging to see Muslims in the mainstream pockets of homeschooling. Make du’a for her efforts, InshaALLAH.

Very Nice Resource for Seerah

Go and check out Prophetic Timeline, it looks nice, mashaALLAH. I haven’t gone through it all the way but so far it is visually pleasing.

InshaALLAH we will be studying the Seerah next year and this is a great resource to have. We will also use the book The Sealed Nectar.
