Riyad-us-Saliheen – Chapter 33, Hadith #269

269. `Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her) reported: A poor woman came to me carrying her two daughters. I gave her three date-fruits. She gave a date to each of them and then she took up one date-fruit and brought that to her mouth to eat, but her daughters asked her that also. She then divided between them the date-fruit that she intended to eat. This (kind) treatment of her impressed me and I mentioned that to Messenger of Allah (PBUH) who said, ‘Verily, Allah has assured Jannah for her, because of (this act) of her,” or said, “He (SWT) has rescued her from Hell-Fire”.
[Muslim].

Commentary: Besides great merit of the upbringing of daughters, this Hadith also tells us that if a wife has secured general permission from her husband about Sadaqah (alms and charity) she can offer Sadaqah, and its reward will be given to both of them. The former will be entitled to it for paying it, while the latter will be eligible to it for giving his consent to it.

Ramadan Kareem and Welcome to the New School Year

Ramadan Kareem and Ramadan Mubarak to everyone! It has been pretty busy around here lately.

For the past month or so, I’ve been gathering our books and trying to figure out which path to take for our homeschool. I’ve read countless blogs to get fresh ideas and mapped out my own. The biggest challenge for us is creating a proper history/geography course and a literature curriculum that is not too far advanced but offers a challenge to my oldest.

My son is using Saxon Phonics I and Saxon Math I and he’s doing quite well with both. I purchased their kindergarten math last year for him and I think it was mostly a waste of time because the lessons were too easy and stretched over two books so it became tedious. He likes the grade one program and looks forward to the lessons, and the routine helps him sit still, lol.

For calendar time, I have set up our old calendar and converted it into a hijri calendar by using the downloads from A Muslim Child is Born. MashaALLAH, go and visit that blog if you haven’t – there are so many resources, AlhamduLILLAH.

In the mornings, we start off the day with Qur’an, Arabic and Islamic Studies. We slacked off a little on Juz ‘Amma so we have to finish it up, InshaALLAH. I purchased some thin silver wire from the dollar store and hung it across the front of the classroom so that we can use it as a sort of word wall.

Word Line

Right now, we’re using it for Arabic. Currently, I am using clothes pins to hang our “laundry”.

I think we may also use it for the 99 Names and Attributes of ALLAH as a visual reminder, InshaALLAH.

Well, it’s getting late here, InshaALLAH I will explain some more in detail later. Have a safe and beneficial Ramadan, Ameen.

Children Too Have Rights Over Their Father

Abu’ul Layth as- Samarqandi (ra) in his book, Tambih al- Ghafilin, relates that a man brought his son to Umar (ra) during his Khilafah and said; “My son does not obey me, he is very disobedient to me.”

Hearing this, Umar (ra) said “Boy don’t you know what rights a father has over his son?”, thereafter he narrated the rights of the father that are duties upon his children.
The boy after listening asked, “Commander of the faithful, do children also have rights over their father?”
Umar (ra) said, “Yes! The children too have rights over their father.”
“What are those rights?” asked the boy.
Umar (ra) replied, “First of all he should search for a good mother for his son. He should marry a virtuous, religious woman, and not any woman of questionable nature and doubtful character.
The second right is to name a child with a good name.
The third right of the child is that he should impart religious knowledge to him and teach him the Qur’an.”
The boy replied, “Commander of the faithful, my father has not discharged any of these duties. Firstly, the woman who is my mother is a slave woman that he had bought for 400 dirhams. She is a woman who is ignorant of religious education, Islamic social manners and morals. It is in her lap that I have passed my infancy. She has not given me any religious education. Who then could I learn from?
Secondly they have not named me with a good name. he has named me Ju’al (meaning an ugly man). I should have been given a good name which was my right, but my father did not discharge his responsibility towards me.
The third is the right of religious education, which they did not give me at all. Now whatever decision you give me I will accept it.”

At this Umar (ra) said to the boy’s father; “You first of all, have been neglectful regarding the boys rights which you did not discharge and now you tell me that your son does not obey you. Get out! It is you who has been disobedient and oppressive.”
