Western Sunrise Part I: The First Hijrah to Al Habasha

*The extensive subject matter is courtesy of the notes taken from the lecture of Shaykh Abdullah Hakim Quick’s Western Sunrise course held at Al Maghrib Institute*

(My notes): Any mistakes are surely mine without the intention of doing so, and May ALLAH forgive me, AMEEN.

The Quraish of Makkah persecuted the Muslims, which led to the migration of 12 male and 4 female Sahabah, including ‘Uthman ibn Affan and Ruqayyah bin Muhammad (SalALLAHU ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam) to Al Habasha in order to seek asylum. Travel during this time was an arduous task, therefore, the number of muhajiroon was small.

This was the first hijrah (religious migration) of the Muslims.

The Prophet (SalALLAHU ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam) said, “If you go to Abyssinia it would be better for you, for in it there is a King who will not tolerate oppression. It is a land of truth. Go until such time as ALLAH shall relieve you from your distress.” (Ahmad)

The Muslims lived in Al Habasha/Abyssinia (Ethiopia) for a short time when they received word that the Quraish had converted to Islam. The muhajiroon returned to Makkah upon hearing the good news. Unfortunately, all was not as they hoped.

The Prophet of ALLAH (SalALLAHU ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam) had recited Surah An-Najm, and the Quraish who were in his presence were overcome by the beauty of ALLAH’s words, so they prostrated towards the Ka’bah. The polytheists of Makkah ostracized those Quraish who had been affected by ALLAH’s words, and the Muslims were in a worse state of oppression than before.

The second hijrah consisted of 83 men and 19 women and was led by Ja’far ibn Abi Talib (Radi-Allahu anhu). The Muslims appealed to the kindness of the Emperor of Axum, As’hamah.

This time, the Quraish sent their own delegates who used bribery and deceit as their tools to convince the emperor to return the Muslims to Makkah.

Ja’far ibn Abi Talib (Radi-Allahu anhu) recited Surah Maryam, causing the emperor and his court to weep. Hearing truth in the words of ALLAH, Emperor As’hamah An-Najaashi granted the Muslims refuge and full protection in his lands.

The Prophet Muhammad (SalALLAHU ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam) sent a letter to An-Najaashi, inviting him to Islam. An-Najaashi secretly accepted. As’hamah then sent his son Armah and 60 riders to Madinah announcing his conversion, but none survived, perishing in the Red Sea.

An-Najaashi died as a Muslim and the Prophet (SalALLAHU ‘Alayhi Wa Sallam) made Janazah prayer for him in absentia. The following was revealed in response to criticism of the Janazah:

“And there is certainly, among the People of the Book those who believe in ALLAH, in the revelation to you, and in the revelation to them, bowing in humility to ALLAH: They will not sell the signs of ALLAH for a miserable gain! For them is a reward with their Lord, and ALLAH is swift in account” (Surah Al -‘Imran: 199).

Fifteen Sahaba died during the Hijrah to Al Habasha. An-Najaashi is buried in Negash, Tigray Province with some of them.

File Folder Games

I’ve managed to make a few more file folder games in the last few weeks. Go to A Muslim Child is Born and take a look at her file folder games. They are excellent for those learning to count in Arabic.

There are also various free games all over net and if you feel creative, you can make your own. They can be as simple or as complicated as you wish and file folder games are excellent supplements to your homeschool.

This one was supposed to be a bit more involved but instead of cutting the robots into smaller pieces, I simply attached the pages to a folder with brads.

AlhamduLILLAH, I have my own computer again!

MashaALLAH,

It has been so stressful since my computer was damaged and I’m sure you’ve noticed that I lost interest in blogging for a while. I was sort of hopping back and forth between my husband’s computer (a Mac) and the classroom computer (has Vista) and that was just not working for me.

I’ve collected some notebooking pages over the years from the Currclick and Notebooking Pages websites and we are now starting to use them. We use them for all sorts of things, like geography, seerah, science, hadith, you name it. My daughter is really responding to the various writing and coloring assignments so I think we’ll keep it up, InshaALLAH.

Recently, we completed a page for Saudi Arabia and one for India as well. I let her search through our country books to find the info and then she traces the map from her atlas.

I didn’t think about the tracing part for Saudi, but I remembered in time for India.

We also labeled the surrounding countries and a few bodies of water. Later on, I asked her to recall the surrounding countries and she did it with no problem! It’s a fun way to learn geography because she loves to draw and it seems to stick in her mind that way. It’s still a work in process, but I think we might include the major bodies of water in the countries the next time, InshaALLAH.

I changed our word line in the classroom as well. We are now memorizing the 99 Names of ALLAH so I’ve added the first fifteen so that we may learn them this week, InshaALLAH. Make du’a for us. I’d like to keep up with these as best as I can.

If You Teach Canadian History

And you want to add in a creative element, “Tales from the Bay: True Stories from the Archives of the Hudson’s Bay Company” can be ordered from HBC. It is free for teachers. You have to order about 30 copies. I think I’ll drop a bunch off at the Islamic school across the street because I know that they follow the Ontario curriculum.

New Mini Bulletin Board, Notebooking

I quickly set up a bulletin board so that we could appreciate the heroes who helped shape Islam along the way. I of course, have been inspired by the recent course that I took and feel this is a nice additiion to the homeschool. It’s nothing fancy for now, but this is our “HEROES” cork board:

Abdul Muttalib

Up first, is a piece on Shaybah ibn Hashim, better known as Abdul Muttalib, grandfather of the Prophet, Peace be Upon Him.

Abdul Muttalib

We also discussed Suratul Fil and made an illustrated notebooking page for it.

Year of the Elephant

My daughter really enjoyed the notebooking page, so I will have to plan something similar for next time, InshaALLAH. I downloaded a bunch of free and purchased bundle sets of notebooking pages from www.notebookingpages.com a while back and this was one of the plain sheets in the back of the medieval set. I have tons of them for geography and so on that were free at one time from currclick.

It’s nice to find creative ways to learn but sometimes it’s a lot of work. It does keep us from burning out though.

I Made it into the Western Sunrise Course

AlhamduLILLAH I was able to attend the Western Sunrise Course (Islamic History in Africa, Al-Andalus, and  the Americas) at Al Maghrib Institute. The course was taught by Shaykh Abdullah Hakim Quick and I must say JazakALLAH Khairin to all of you who made du’a for me to go.

There were extensive notes provided in a bound, spiral notebook and we were able to ask lots of intense, discussion-worthy questions to the Shaykh which he graciously answered.  As a homeschooling mom, I must urge you to attend if possible. This was the first time in seven years that I have spent so much time alone, away from my kids (giving birth at the hospital doesn’t count, lol).

The Shaykh urged us to share what we’ve learned (otherwise, what’s the point, right?) so I plan to do just that, InshaALLAH. I will be studying for the exam (on the 31st) but in the meantime, I will organize my notes and thoughts in order to share them with you, InshaALLAH.

InshaALLAH, you will see why we as an Ummah, need to stop being sucked into the cultural and racial centric ideals and start being “Makkah-centric”. Why there needs to be an Islamic revival and we need to learn our history as well as document the present for future generations. For instance, did you know that the Muslims entered the Americas long before Christopher Columbus ever dreamed of reaching it (which he never did)? Qayrawaan, Marrakech, Cordoba, Toledo, Seville, Fez, Timbuktu and countless other Islamic cities were great centres of learning? Did you know that the country Portugal gets its name from the Arabic “burtuqaal”, which means orange? About 30% of all slaves taken to the Americas were Muslim. Traditionally, Muslims always drew their maps, this way. I could go on and on, but you’ll have to wait 🙂

Laundry Line pdf – finally scanned

Umm Abdul Basir was the one who roused me out of my state of procrastination, lol. Forgive me for any mistakes, InshaALLAH. My kids colored some of them but the others are rewritten in black and white, (they were too dark for the words to be seen).
