Getting Started With Reading

It seems that I am perpetually teaching reading around here. Since everyone is about two years apart, I guess this is true, lol. My first child took to reading so quickly and has developed such a love for it that I often have to force her to go to bed at night. She’s used flashlights, nightlights and whatever other source she could find to light her books. Finally, I gave in and purchased a lamp for her so that she wouldn’t damage her eyesight.

My son is a reluctant reader. He will do it begrudgingly and he’s getting pretty good at it too. The strange thing about him is that he will literally carry around a book or an ereader all day. I’m not sure if he’s planning to read on his own time but at least he seems really fond of carrying his books, lol.

When he first started homeschooling, I figured it would be easy to get him started on his journey to literacy since I was tremendously successful with his sister. SubhanAllah was I ever wrong.  He had a hard time remembering the sounds of the letters and was not motivated to learn. He just did not have any interest in reading, writing or anything else we were doing in our homeschool.

I started with Saxon Phonics and panicked. It was not working out like I hoped. What I learned is that every child is different. For real. The way that one child is taught may not appeal to/work for another child. So I tried a combination of things until we made it work. We used Explode the Code 1, copywork, notebooking, read alouds, Saxon Phonics (he took to it after using Explode the Code) and .

Finally, everything clicked and we are using that I used with his sister. He finished his first chapter book on Friday and is reading his second book now. He reads a chapter a day aloud and then I put the book away, out of his sight. By the time his required reading is finished, he’s just on the verge of pouting, but I push him through it because I know that he can do it.

I think that I was tougher on his sister, testing her limits and pushing her further than we both thought was possible. It made her a strong, independent learner. She is a child that goes searching for new things to learn. I am now doing the same for him, InshaAllah. He’s learning Arabic, Quran, multiplication (in a week, InshaAllah), all things that she was not doing at his age, so in some ways, he’s ahead. 🙂

Next up, my third child will begin her own reading journey, InshaAllah.

Studio Arabiya

***This is not a paid advertisement*** Even during difficult times, we’ve kept up with our studies. We added a new and delightful method of learning to our curriculum a few weeks ago and my husband and I have been pleased with the results, MashaAllah.

Studio Arabiya uses Skype to conduct classes in Arabic and Quran memorization. Our older children participate Monday through Friday in two half-hour classes and their progress has been fantastic, AlhamduLillah. The main materials that we needed to start the course was a web cam, two notebooks and two pencils. The Arabic course covers the materials found in Kitab al-Asasi:

At first I was skeptical because they were both very timid (which is unlike them) and were quietly answering questions, or not answering at all! I was certainly glad that we had a free trial period, lol. By the end of the week we were still a little unsure but decided to stick with it. I am glad that we did because they both gradually conquered their shyness and their progress has been great ever since, AlhamduLillah.

They are given a bit of homework each day, such as memorization of vocabulary words or taking a few moments to recall the latest surah, but nothing that overwhelms them or takes a significant amount of time. The best part is that they have bonded with their instructors and look forward to their lessons each day . Try them out here: www.studioarabiya.com

The course is not only for children; try them for yourselves as well, InshaALLAH.

Getting Our Vitamin C

My husband caught a cold and kindly passed it on to me and my son, lol.  I notice that we get a lot of colds through my husband. I guess that makes sense, after all, he’s the one who goes out into the world and deals with the general public day to day (i.e public transit, shopping, etc.)

Does this ring true for you all too? The children go to weekend Islamic school (socialization!) but they haven’t had any problems with contracting illnesses. We’ve been under the weather for a few days but we’ve gotten plenty of vitamin C. They were a little frustrated at how difficult it is to make your own juice and surprised at the amount of elbow grease they needed to apply! Homeschool lesson: sometimes you have to work hard for the good stuff.

This Was Fun… Until We Found Worms!

We finished our semester on botany with a simple flower dissection. This meant that the younger two children pulled petals off and scattered them all over the house while we tried to save some for the actual dissection, lol.

It was very difficult to find the parts, in fact, I think we went through about five or six flowers. If we do this again in the future, InshaALLAH I will get bigger flowers. Of course, the most beautiful of the bunch had worms in it! There were lots of fascinated “Eeeews!” during that part, lol.

Overall, the botany semester was enjoyable. We didn’t try to do too much so I didn’t feel rushed or frustrated. We also managed to cover a lot of ground in art/drawing by incorporating it into our lessons.

Now I have to quickly gather supplies for chemistry and get the reading materials together, InshaALLAH. I’m still not quite sure what we will be doing but it will definitely be inexpensive and hopefully fun too.

In Spite of Everything, We’re Moving Forward

I found out that we were expecting just a couple of days after Eid, but about two weeks ago I had a miscarriage. It has taken a little time to adjust (physically) but AlhamduLillah, I am able to get back to a normal routine.

The good thing is that everyone was able to keep up with their studies despite countless visits to the hospital and lack of sleep. My neighbor was a big help, MashaAllah. She cooked meals for us and the children stayed over a few times. She has a home-ed family as well, so there was no way that they could slack off, lol.

I thank you all for your du’a and kind words, they helped me to accept our qadr and keep things in perspective.

P.S. I have a few emails to answer but InshaALLAH I will reply to everyone soon.

Getting into Adventures

The past few weeks have been so busy, AlhamduLILLAH. We’ve had a lot of work to do, some of which we completed and some that had to be pushed aside until Allah knows best.

We had a real nice run of warm weather, MashaALLAH – I’ve been reading about snow that fell on the East coast and can’t believe that we haven’t had any yet. I’m sure it’s on its way, lol. I’m always taken off guard when the cold weather comes but the children take it in stride.

Lately, they have found different (destructive) ways to amuse themselves, like sneaking off to the washroom late in the evening and cutting their brother’s hair (straight down the middle) so that it has to be shaved completely off. Oh, and filling the sink with sand! My husband and I had to undo the pipe and literally dig the sand out! I still can’t figure out who did it (or when). SubhanAllah, this was all done during Dhul Hijjah while I was fasting and I was feeling peaceful enough to just deal with it and let it go. I’m sure there’s some other fun stuff that I don’t know about, but that’s okay, lol.

We did manage to get outside and explore a little bit. We overturned rocks and looked in holes to see what we could see. We read a huge book about mushrooms and then found this on a tree.

Inside was just as interesting, as we’ve been busy in the kitchen, trying out new recipes and techniques, like this bread (scroll down, the video is not there but the recipe is):

I found a video for braiding the bread (very easy, wait til you see the video) and I couldn’t wait to try it. I used a loaf pan for mine, so it rose to the shape of the pan instead of keeping the original shape.

I also made dinner rolls using the same recipe and the children loved it (they are addicted to carbs, so they love bread). The recipe remind me of biscuits a little bit.

They can be frozen, or you can turn them into pizza for lunch. I let the children top the bread (a bit too much cheese?) and then they popped it into the oven until the cheese melted. I was glad that we were able to eat all of the bread without wasting any, AlhamduLILLAH.
