Introducing School to the Younger Kids

This is the first time that I have had my son in the classroom for an extended period of time. Since my mother in law is not here anymore, I have all of the children in the class! What a challenge, subhanALLAH. Since the classroom is downstairs, we’re all downstairs, lol.

So far, things have been productive and are running smoothly. There have been a few temper flare-ups between my son and his two year old sister but they are seventeen months apart, so it is to be expected. The key is to keep her occupied and try to find activities that are relevant to his lesson that his little sister can try.

Monday was his first lesson in the Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. It starts with the sounds of letters “m”, “s” and “a”. Since we purchased an extra Scrabble game I took the letters out and put them in two wooden bowls. I forgot that the letters are capitals and that he was learning lowercase, so I did a quick mini-lesson on recognizing the capitals.

Learning to Read

Then, I wrote the letters on the whiteboard and asked them to fish through the bowls and find them. MashaALLAH, even my two year old found them!

Letters of the week: S M A

I found some nice name tags for the kids at a website called Teachers Pay Teachers. They cost $1.00. I’m sure there are plenty of free ones out there but I like the shapes and colors on these. You can see one of them next to the bowl. I laminated them so that they can practice tracing their names with a dry-erase marker.

Letters of the week: S M A T

Tuesday, we continued with the same letters but once I see a little progress I can’t help myself so I added the letter “T”. He remembered the sound, MashaALLAH so I got him to sound out “m-a-s-t” and he did it! I get so excited when they start to read, lol.

I bought some rubber stamps from Ebay so that they could have a different hands-on activity. I only allowed them to use the letters that we are learning at the moment. They had fun with the stamping and were sad when it was time to put them away.

My oldest was taking a break and decided to join in the fun.

She Wants Hers Next to the Ka'ba

She insisted on putting hers next to the Ka’ba, mashaALLAH.

Next up was math. The first unit in his Singapore Math K book is about same-different relationships. I have a set of math manipulatives that we purchased some time ago and I’ve been waiting to open the set of dominoes. I asked them to put the dominoes together with all of the sides matching while I went to pray. MashaALLAH, when I returned, I saw that he was busy making a robot and trying to match the sides, lol.

Matching Dominoes...er Making Robots

When it was time for our textbook work, I needed an activity to keep my little one busy, so I decided to do something Montessori-like.

I filled a bowl with some simple wooden balls (Ebay again) and she transferred them to a measuring cup with a plastic spoon. She did this for a long time, alhamduLILLAH so we made it through the lesson without incident.

And of course, baby was there too, wondering why she couldn’t nibble on a crayon or two.

Back to School II

I have completed our schedule (except a few things and the inclusion of some novels and a couple of books to be read) and it seems to be flowing smoothly. We open the day with Suratul Fatiha and then my daughter recites whatever surah she is working on with her father from the night before. Then, she has a 10 minute speed drill for UCMAS (we’re taking a break from classes until September)so that she doesn’t lose her rhythm.

Up next is phonics. We’re using Pathway Readers, a program that was developed for Amish schoolchildren. It is very thorough and comes with its own grammar books, chapter books and workbooks. The stories are about the happenings between the children of families living within a small farming community.

We are in the second of the three chapter books and it has mentioned that the children got ready for church twice. I changed it to mosque long before she ever got to the pages and there’s been no issues since. I don’t have a problem with her knowing that some people go to church because they do; However, I want her to forge her Muslim identity and make learning relevant to her world.

On Mondays, we do short spelling lessons from Spelling Grade 3

Tuesdays, we have Islamic Studies from Stories of the World by Safia Iqbal. The whole set costs about $50 with shipping to Canada and overall, I am pleased. The first few chapters cover the creation of the world, early man and The First Man (Adam, alayhi salaam). From there, we have early cultures (Indus Valley, Sumerians,Mesopotamians, etc).

Stories of the World

Today we read about the creation of the world and tied it in to Surah ad-Dukhan (The Smoke). We burned a candle under a glass until it burned out and filled with smoke in order to simulate a nebula, AlhamduLILLAH.

Nebula Simulation/Smoky Glass

Tuesdays and Thursdays are for Science. We are using the free resource that I posted a while back.

Germination

Wednesdays, we also have Islamic Studies but that is from Susan Douglass’ Islamic Books series. We are currently using the grade 2 books.

Monday, Wednesday and Fridays are for Rosetta Stone’s Arabic program. She’s doing well with this and once she calmed down and followed the cues, she got through the program without any help.

Banaat / Girls

Fridays are also for art and nature walks. I got a few ideas from That Artist Woman’s blog for a couple of weeks and I’m not sure what we’ll do after that. I may get a few ideas from this book – I put it on hold at the library so I don’t know how good the projects are.

I still haven’t added math to the schedule. We are right at the end of the first section of Singapore Math 2. Also, we are doing math copywork for math facts. I have the worksheets ready for this too but I haven’t put them on the schedule. It seems like every time I make a schedule I forget about the math. What does that mean? LOL.

I also have several books that I would like her to read (Canadian history with a focus on First Nations People/50 states study)and I need to figure out how and when we will add these.

And of course, I need to add some type stories of the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa salaam) and Al Khilafah ar-Rashidun. Also, I finally put the leaves on the tree so it’s ready to go.

Prophet's(SAWS) Family Tree

Prophet's(SAWS) Family Tree

Everything is still a work in progress, but it’s a start.

Next: my son’s schedule, InshaALLAH.

Back to School

Welcome Back to School

We took an extensive break when my mom visited back in June and did very little organized school work. Instead, I used the time to get familiar with my Homeschool Tracker software and deciding what our goals should be and which resources are available to attain them.

What I Use

Here is a small screen shot of the student assignments. There are better shots on the website. It costs $49 US. The owners are nice folks. When I received it in the mail, the disk was shattered in a bunch of pieces. I emailed them and they promptly sent another one which I got the next week. That was a year ago and I’ve only recently gotten serious about using it, lol.

Screen Shot of the Homeschool Tracker

I also have the other lesson planning software that we got for a few dollars and have decided to use it only for the extra discs with the special fonts. Since I was already (vaguely) familiar with the Homeschool Tracker, I decided to stop being lazy and learn how to use it. There is a forum for users which has video tutorials and I definitely found them to be useful.

*By the way, I’m not an affiliate of either of them – I’m just letting you know what’s out there and what works (or doesn’t) for me. Donna Young is also very good (and free) and I’m not affiliated with her either but her button is on the left sidebar if you need to get forms from her.*

I’ve been looking at Ambleside Online over the past couple of months and as I’ve mentioned before, I really like its approach. I like the idea of short lessons because:we can cover more topics; our curriculum becomes rich with literature; we seem to accomplish more and not burn ourselves out; my children are able to grasp concepts in small bites and not feel overwhelmed; we can work consistently on a topic without feeling the need to take the whole day to finish it.

Coming up: I would like to share what we have scheduled for our days ahead but in order to do that, I will need to make a separate blog post (it’s long so hang in there – hopefully you won’t be bored, lol).

Alphabet Animations and Letter Sounds

If you go to the Starfall site, there are tools to help your child learn the alphabet sounds. I usually emphasize the sounds of the letters rather than focusing on each letter name (although they obviously need to know the names too, lol). Also, I tend to teach/place emphasis on lowercase letters first.

Anyway, these are cute – I didn’t check letter “P” so I don’t know what’s there (when I get alphabet books or puzzles I always look at this letter first to see if it has a you-know-what 😉

***Edited to add – The “p” word I am avoiding is “pig”. The kids will go on and on about how we don’t eat pork, etc. This is not a bad thing but because they are so young, it becomes a distraction and they lose focus, so I avoid pictures of them whenever possible. Besides, penguin starts with “p” too. 😉

Clever Toddler Activities

Second Attempt 135mm f/2.8 Nikon

One question that I get frequently is what to do with your toddler while the others are having school. This is also something that I am dealing with and so far it’s not a real problem, AlhamduLILLAH. I usually give my two year old a workbook that I purchased from the dollar store if I don’t have an activity planned.

She feels like she is a big girl and I can focus on the older kids. Also, I try to have a few general lessons where I can include everyone and if I am reading aloud, she listens, even if the material is way above her level. I found a website today where there’s an abundance of ideas and tutorials. I hope that it is beneficial to you.

Word Family Game

I was visiting The Snail’s Trail blog a couple of weeks ago and admiring some of her creative homeschool ideas. In particular, I liked the Handmade Word Family Game.

I sent my husband to the Home Depot to get some paint swatches and let me tell you – I was so tired of cutting out those little squares!

Handmade Word Family Game

I used a craft knife for the squares but I’m sure there is a better way.

Butterfly Teaching Guide

MashaALLAH we might be going to the Butterfly Conservatory in Niagara during the month of August, InshaALLAH. Make du’a for us.

In the meantime, I am going to take a look at their teaching guide and see what we can get out of it. We can use it to supplement the Butterfly Field Guide that I purchased at the thrift store.

Pets From Outside

My husband won’t get any pets for my kids so my daughter took it into her own hands, literally. Now we have three snails to look after – for a little while, at least!

The Girl Has Snails

Oh well, we’ll have to make it educational, I guess. Go here for snail info: Snails as Pets.

I’ve Been Thrifting

Yesterday and today, I went to Value Village. I rarely buy anything new anymore when it comes to our classroom. I try to look on Craigslist – which I really did not like at first and I go to the thrift shops or Ebay. Also, the library sells books for 25 cents each, so sometimes we get some really good stuff.

David Suzuki

Atlas

This time I tried not to go overboard just because things were cheap. I made a list and devised a plan and for the most part I found what I needed. This was not on the list but how could I leave this behind? MashaALLAH.

Ka'ba clock $3.99

My toddler is the biggest challenge to our homeschool day, so I’ve been searching blogs and Google for ideas. I think the best thing that I can do with her is set up a makeshift Montessori-style area. I found a bookcase that is perfect for her size on Craigslist for $10.

Bought for $10

I also purchased a bundle of wooden baskets from Value Village so that her activities can be placed on the shelves and hopefully they will be eye-catching and inviting. I got plenty of ideas from Montessori Materials.

Baskets

These baskets are good for sensory materials like these Scrabble tiles. I might make a simple chart of the alphabet and have her match the letters. Rubber stamps of the alphabet would be good too. Anything hands-on that introduces her to learning is valuable, InshaALLAH.

Scrabble Letters

Since my mother-in-law was visiting, we took another quick trip today and got some more books. If you buy four, the fifth one is free!

More Books

To make room for the books, I moved the puzzles and games up on top of the bookshelf and I’m putting some of the books for younger ages on the bookshelf for my younger daughter.

Classroom

Then, I had to make room for the little bits of this and that from outside.

Having Trouble Emailing Me?

I don’t know, things seem okay on this end but some people are having trouble. I put my Email address at the top; you can see it above the posts (themuslimhomeschooler@gmail.com). By the way, don’t leave your Email addresses in the comments because everyone can see them. I check the email often but sometimes it might take me a bit to get back to you. InshaALLAH I will always do my best.
