The Children Have Pink Eye and Hives

Before the children became ill, we tried the lemon-drizzle cake from My So Called Life… and MashaALLAH, it was very tasty.

We were supposed to go to a homeschool picnic on Saturday, but as we were getting ready, I noticed the swelling and excess discharge in my son’s eye. I didn’t want them to pass it along to the other children so we canceled. This really hurt their feelings because they wanted to go so badly. My husband decided that we would still go to the park (a different, local park) and have a picnic with just the family a bit later in the day.

They all felt awful on the way to the park but after a while, things got better and they had a light snack and played. AlhamduLILLAH, we had a nice time and they were able to blow off some steam (and bubbles) and try out their new baseball gloves.

In spite of his swollen eyes, my son managed to catch a few, (to the delight of his dad).

InshaALLAH the worst seems to have passed, but I am giving them a break. It’s about time for one anyway and I need to prepare for Ramadan and the coming school year, InshaALLAH.

Do you have any special plans, crafts or activities for Ramadan? Are you decorating the house/classroom? Will it be the same as last year or are you doing more or less?

To be honest, I haven’t decided yet and I find it amazing that some of you already have your things ready mashaALLAH! I always think that I need to start planning for the next year this year, lol.

Surah Kahf Video

This week, we watched videos to supplement our Islamic learning. MashaALLAH, there are many beneficial resources for children nowadays; the hard part is sorting through them. This one does have music in a couple of parts (at the beginning and in the middle). Do you know of any videos for Suratul Kahf?

Take care,

Mothers of the Believers Lapbook

Mothers of the Believers Lapbook
AlhamduLILLAH, the idea of this lapbook has been in my head for so long. It took a lot of writing, cutting, coloring and taping but it is done, MashaALLAH.

Mothers of the Believers Lapbook
During the process, my daughter learned the names of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad, salallahu alayhi wa salaam and a short biography. I mainly used
The Fragile Vessels by Muhammad al-Jibaly and The Wives of the Prophet Muhammad by Ahmad Thomson as sources.

I found the lapbook templates here. This is really handy because you can print and cut out a bunch of them to have on hand for later, InshaALLAH.

Safiyya bint Huyayy’s (Radi-Allahu anha) mini book has a brad underneath the flower so that it turns around for easy reading.Sorry for the blur. I took the photos immediately after my class today. I was exhausted and actually fell asleep at my desk for a few minutes!

Geography Exam

Geography Exam
We had an informal exam for geography a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to make sure that the activities we have done were conducive to learning and not just for show….

I put a very rough sketch of the world on the board (lol, really rough) with a few images as hints and then asked my daughter to fill in the blanks. She was very excited (anything to avoid writing – and math!) and AlhamduLILLAH, the activity went very well.  This yer, we covered lots of Asia and a tiny bit of Europe. Now, we must move on to Ancient Africa, InshaALLAH.

I’ve been busy with my own exams (in my Arabic class), so in between memorizing some 30 poems or so, (yikes!), I’m homeschooling and still organizing the blog. I’m getting quite a few emails about our anticipated curriculum for the coming year and I hope to have that finalized soon, InshaALLAH. 🙂

What is your outline for the coming year? Are you starting after Eid ul fitr or during Ramadan?

Take care,

Late Reminder!

Today, I read an explanation of Surah Kahf to the children and my daughter read aloud The Adventures of Zulqarnain by Shiban Akbar. We also read about the companions of the cave in My Quran Friends Storybook by Saniyasnain Khan and the story of the two gardens in My First Quran Storybook….

Sources of Truth

AlhamduLILLAH, I feel good knowing that we are trying to put forth the efforts to know and love the Quraan.

Every now and then, I give my daughter copywork for her notebook from Provisions for the Seekers,

Short, Concise Hadeeth

but today we copied a nice du’a from My First Quran Storybook.

Reading Progress Report

AlhamduLILLAH, the end of the Bob Books (collection 3) series is near and my son is reading much better now. MashaALLAH, recording his reading sessions has allowed me to catch his mistakes and devise a plan to correct them.

He’s still having trouble with the long “e” sound for some reason and I noticed that he wants to add the letter “n” after the letter “s”.  I think that he’ll have to practice reading words that have digraph “ee” (long “e” sound in the middle of the word) from the whiteboard, InshaALLAH.

Remember these?

I made these so long ago that I’d forgotten them. I believe I was expecting my third child at the time and my brain was foggy. 🙂 Anyway, they add a little novelty to the reading practice so that he doesn’t feel that it’s boring or tiresome. If you make them, use something sharp. I used what I had on hand at the time, which was craft knife that was a bit too dull, and the window boxes are not very even.
