We started our new school year at the beginning of August but I found it a bit too ambitious while fasting and scaled back the workload. Still, we continued with math, educational games, Quran memorization and reading, and a bit of container gardening. My oldest wants to study botany this year, so we started growing green peppers from discarded seeds. We soaked them in hydrogen peroxide and then planted them in potting soil in pots and containers on our balcony.
We are using a curriculum which was developed by another homeschool mom and we are using two of the three books – the third book was only being offered used at the time and the shipping cost was more than the book, lol.
We discovered that our balcony is the perfect spot for feeding pests – namely squirrels! So, each night, we cover the pots with laundry baskets and use heavy rocks to keep them in place. As you can see, it’s very easy to get them going. We eventually separated them and moved them to separate pots.
So far, we’ve also completed leaf-rubbings, drawn the parts of a plant cell, compared different types of leaves and my son labeled the parts of a tree.
We are also growing basil in the kitchen, which not only smells nice but tastes great!
